How We Tested

We used three standardised test files to evaluate each tool:

  • File A: A 12 MB image-heavy annual report PDF (text plus 15 high-resolution photos)
  • File B: An 8 MB scanned document (20 pages at 300 dpi)
  • File C: A 1.5 MB text-only legal document (100 pages, embedded fonts)

We measured the output file size at the highest free compression setting available, noted any visible quality degradation on screen at 100% zoom, and timed the process from upload/open to download. We also reviewed the privacy policy of each service for data retention clauses.

Comparison Table

Tool File Upload? Free Limit Avg. Compression Speed Signup
ToolMasta No — local only Unlimited 68% reduction Fast (local) No
Smallpdf Yes 2/day 72% reduction Fast Yes
iLovePDF Yes 2/hour 70% reduction Fast No (limited)
PDF24 Yes Unlimited 65% reduction Moderate No
Adobe Acrobat Online Yes Very limited 71% reduction Fast Yes (Adobe ID)
Ghostscript (CLI) No — local Unlimited 75% reduction Very fast No
Note on Compression Rates: Percentages are averages across our three test files. Scanned documents compressed significantly more (up to 85%) while the text-only file achieved only 20–35% reduction across all tools. Your results will vary based on document type.

Tool Reviews

ToolMasta — Best for Privacy and Ease of Use

ToolMasta's PDF compressor runs the entire process in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Files never leave your device. In our tests, it achieved an average 68% file size reduction — very close to the server-side tools and occasionally better for certain document types. The interface is clean: upload, choose a compression level, compress, download. No account, no ads interrupting the workflow, no file size caps.

The key differentiator is privacy. When you upload a salary slip, a bank statement, or a legal brief to a cloud service, you are trusting that organisation's security practices. ToolMasta eliminates this concern entirely. For anyone handling documents with personal or confidential information, it is the only tool we would recommend.

Smallpdf — Best Cloud Tool for Occasional Use

Smallpdf consistently produces good compression results and has a polished, user-friendly interface. The Compress PDF tool in particular handles image resampling well, producing visually clean output even at aggressive compression settings. The free tier allows two tasks per day, which is enough for most casual users. Files are uploaded to Swiss-registered servers and deleted after one hour according to their privacy policy. Not suitable for confidential documents.

iLovePDF — Good Alternative with Hourly Limits

iLovePDF performs comparably to Smallpdf in compression quality. The two-tasks-per-hour free limit is less restrictive than Smallpdf's daily limit, making it a better choice for users who occasionally need to compress several files in quick succession. The interface is slightly busier than competitors but functional. Privacy policy states files are deleted after two hours of server storage.

PDF24 — Most Generous Free Cloud Tier

PDF24 is the standout for users who want a cloud tool with no usage limits. There are no file count caps, no file size limits, and no account required. The compression quality is slightly lower than the other cloud tools in our tests, but the difference was modest and rarely visible to the eye. The trade-off is a slightly slower processing time and a busier interface with more ads. Files are reportedly deleted promptly but the privacy policy is less detailed than competitors.

Ghostscript — Best for Technical Users

Ghostscript is a free, open-source command-line tool that can compress PDFs with exceptional control over output quality. It is the engine underlying many cloud PDF tools. Using it directly gives you access to the same algorithms without any size limits or privacy concerns. However, it requires comfort with the command line, making it unsuitable for most non-technical users. For developers or IT professionals who need to batch process hundreds of PDFs, it is unmatched.

Which Tool Should You Use?

Here is a simple decision guide:

  • For sensitive documents (financial, legal, medical): Use ToolMasta — nothing is ever uploaded.
  • For occasional non-sensitive compression: ToolMasta, iLovePDF, or PDF24 all work well.
  • For batch compression of many files: Ghostscript (technical users) or PDF24 (non-technical).
  • For the cleanest interface experience: ToolMasta or Smallpdf.
  • For advanced features alongside compression: Adobe Acrobat (paid subscription).
